Our mission: help people make informed decisions about antivirus software.
Every antivirus software on the market claims to be the best.
The real question: How do you decide which is the best antivirus software for you? How do you get real, unbiased opinions about which product really works and will really protect you?
Let's be honest: most folks don't have the time or interest to test the software and determine how each one works. We do. And, it's all we do.
With over a decade of combined software industry knowledge, our team knows antivirus software; we test and review every product from top-to-bottom ourselves in-house on many different types of PCs: desktops, laptops, notebooks, you name it!
Read the reviews, check out the product ratings, and find the software that works best for you.
From time to time we're asked how we make money from this site and keep it running.
Here's how it works: When you purchase a product from our site, that product's manufacturer pays us a small referral fee for referring you.
In addition to over-riding editorial ethics, because all manufacturers pay these referral fees, we remain impartial. Thus, our only goal is to help you find the best antivirus software for your particular needs, regardless of who makes it.
We're confident of the strength of our reviews, and we're sure you'll find value in our site no matter what you decide.
At no point does--or can--a manufacturer pay us for top placement or for a better review, nor can they. Some (although not all), however, do provide us complimentary, early/beta, or evaluation versions of the software. This, too, has no weight in how we rank the products.
We test the software. We review it. We rate it. We rank it. That's it.
Our Antivirus Software Rating Process
Another question we often get is about how we determine the product rankings.
This "how we do it" part is what makes our reviews so useful.
Many review sites, at most, will install the software, take some screenshots, and tell you "Product X is the best!"
Other sites may actually test the software's ability to detect viruses to some degree, putting the antivirus software against a handful or a couple of dozen viruses; others may even test removal capabilities.
Our tests involve thousands upon thousands of real viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, bootkits, spyware, keyloggers, malicious websites, phishing websites, spams, and every other imaginable malware and infection technique.
No one else we know of does all this then objectively reports the results and puts it all together.
We install each program on multiple computers (desktops, notebooks, laptops, etc.) and take screenshots along the way to show you what the software looks like. Then we test the software with our huge and (unfortunately) growing repository of viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, keyloggers, spyware, adware, and other malware on these different PCs and document the outcome.
Does the software detect the viruses? Does it remove them? What about the spyware? How'd it do against the trojans? And so on.
Next, we look at the overall experience of running the software day in and day out and see how well the programs work. What's it really like to live with this software?
Does it slow down your PC? Is sending email painful? How about surfing the web? What's it like when you need to reboot your PC? Does it protect against USB-based viruses and worms? And so on.
Then we take the results, include the user experience aspect, and then factor in things like price, customer service, and ease of installation to determine a total rating.
In the end you get a real idea of what to expect from the antivirus software and see an accurate picture of how each manufacturer stands behind its product and treats its customers.
Check out our Antivirus Software Comparison Chart for a quick and easy assessment of each antivirus software application and to use our buyer's guide to help you in selecting the right software for your needs.
Finally, lest it go unsaid, while we do make referral fees for helping you choose the software that's right for you, our ratings are evenhanded and without bias towards one product or another.
