Trend Micro Antivirus Software has gone through numerous incarnations since the brand's inception more than a quarter of a century ago.
In that time, the products have been of varying performance, and those we've tested have fluctuated in quality and reliability.
However, the most recent Trend Micro 2015 offering does at least provide mostly solid anti-malware protection.
Trend Micro Antivirus
Trend Micro Internet Security program has several additional features the Antivirus version is fairly basic.
It's best known for basic antivirus protection and also has antiphishing.
The user interface isn't our favorite: we found it small and cramped, even though it looks clean and modern on the surface.
Digging deeper reveals a clumsy navigation with too many separate windows to open and close.
Add to all this poor technical support that could cost you anywhere from $119-$179 per year for more serious issues like manual virus removal. Far overpriced, in our opinion.
All in all, Trend Micro Antivirus doesn't stack up well this year.
In the most recent tests, we've found that Trend Micro Antivirus provides improved protection compared to what it offered in previous years.
While the virus removal, virus scanning, spyware detection, and malware scanning performed fairly well, and succeeded in blocking significant threats, the real-time virus blocking wasn't particularly impressive compared to other similarly priced antivirus products.
Trend Micro Security
Trend Micro Internet Security 2015 delivers the same basic features as the standard antivirus package, but offers greater online protection.
The parental control feature performed adequately and there are built-in identity theft protection features that aren't available on the standard Trend Micro antivirus program.
There's also a feature that scans emails and a social media privacy setting monitor that scans Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and Twitter accounts.
Finally, Trend Micro Internet Security has a system optimization feature to help the operating system perform its best.
Trend Micro Maximum Security offers all of the protection of their Internet Security suite plus several other features.
You can store up to 5GB worth of data in the cloud in either backup files or basic storage (photos, vital documents, etc.)
There's also a password manager for online accounts plus a secure browser designed specifically for online banking.
Trend Micro Maximum
One of the most notable features of Trend Micro Maximum Security offers is support for multiple operating systems: Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
As far as protection for Android and iOS devices (i.e. phones and tablets), it includes
malicious app identification
lost device location
Trend Micro Maximum Security 2015 covers up to 3 devices total, whether they're PC, Mac, iOS, or Android.
Although there may be a way to add additional devices, we were unable to see how.
