    McAfee vs Trend Micro

    Comparison Winner:
    $49.99
    McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2012 Review
    $39.95
Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus + Antispyware 2012 Review
Category I: Virus & Spyware Protection
    Real-time Virus Protection 90 93
    Manual Virus Scanning 68 95
    Virus Removal 68 92
    USB Virus Scanning 69 76
    Spyware Detection 76 90
    Antivirus Updates 76 90
Winner: Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus + Antispyware 2012
Trend Micro and McAfee start out similarly priced, but that's where the similarities pretty much end.

While McAfee managed to beat Trend in two of the virus/spyware protection categories--and only by a couple of points in those areas, it doesn't put together the same overall protection here that Trend does.

A win for Trend in overall PC security.
    Category II: Additional Security Features
    Web Protection 90 93
    Chat/IM Protection 0 90
    Email Protection 0 75
Winner: Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus + Antispyware 2012
As we saw in our other 2011 head-to-head antivirus software comparisons where McAfee is involved, its all but impossible for it to win this category since it lacks email protection.

On top of having a feature McAfee lacks, it's also nearly as good in the two it does--web and chat/im protection.

So, given that McAfee only has web and chat/im protection, the clear and easy choice for this category is Trend Micro.
    Category III: Other Usability Factors
    Installation 40 85
    Uninstallation 92 94
    Resource Usage 72 75
    User Interface 60 67
    Technical Support 71 83
Winner: Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus + Antispyware 2012
In comparing these two programs for usability, the nod goes to Trend in Category III, too.

With a better, much simpler installation process and an easier-to-use interface Trend really pulls ahead. Then factor in better tech support, and Trend Micro aces McAfee once again.
    Conclusion:
    vs.
It doesn't matter what category you compare: Virus and Spyware Protection, Additional Security Features, or Usability Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus proves to be a better designed, more well-rounded product.

What's more, it's easier to install and has better tech support, too.

About the only areas where McAfee gains an edge are in Virus Removal and Resource Usage, neither of which are enough to make much difference against Trend's strong points, of which there are plenty.

No question on Trend Micro vs McAfee: Trend all the way.
