    Although ESET did impressively in our real-time protection tests, with one of the highest scores in our 2011 tests, VIPRE did even better.

    Looking beyond the real-time tests at the rest of the Virus & Spyware Protection tests in our comparison, it's a one-sided affair with VIPRE besting ESET in every category we tested.

    In some cases, as with USB Virus Scanning and Antivirus Updates, VIPRE won by 25 points or more. No contest: VIPRE wins.

    ESET scores its one win in the head-to-head against VIPRE in the Email Protection category, where it edged past VIPRE.

    Beyond that though in both Chat and Web Protection, VIPRE does better. With that VIPRE rolls on to its second Category win.

    While both programs are super easy to install, VIPRE pulls out another victory with Category III, as it beats ESET in every other test.

    Of particular note: the difference in technical support the two companies offer.

    Conclusion:

    Although ESET provides good overall protection against viruses and other malware, VIPRE outperformed ESET in all but one of our antivirus tests. (Excluding the one tie score in installation, of course.)

    When we looked at the specifics, we saw chat protection lacking in ESET, and weaker tech support, too.

    While it did ring up a higher score in Email Protection, that was ESET's only win.

    On balance, this was undeniably a lopsided contest: VIPRE wins.
