    VIPRE Internet Security 2013

As with the basic version of VIPRE Antivirus, installation takes longer than most competitors. And, it may not be as pretty as some either.

It is, however, fast, easy to understand, and easy to use. It's also great at doing it's job: keeping your PC secure and virus-free. After all, that's really what Internet Security software is all about.

    BitDefender Internet Security 2013

BitDefender works well and is easy to use, but its dark interface is unusual and may take some getting used to.

Once we did, it was easier to use than last year's version. Next: the more important task of measuring its effectiveness against viruses.

    Kaspersky Internet Security 2013

Over the years, even though Kaspersky is at the high end of the price spectrum, they've helped define what good Internet security software is.

Yes, the interface still has some issues that should've been easily fixed but weren't, but it's still very strong where it counts.

    Norton Internet Security 2013

While previous versions emphasized features (and style) over core protection and speed, this one focuses on the good stuff: multi-layered PC protection.

The result: virus protection, usability, and speed all improved, with it scoring well in virus removal and realtime protection.

    ESET Smart Security 6

While it's better in overall PC and Internet security than last year, ESET falls short for 2013.

ESET's web-filter is greatly improved and was able to block the majority of real-time, zero-day threats, but further testing revealed some unavoidable holes in ESET's security net.

    Avira Internet Security 2013

Avira's very slow installation (10 minutes) wasn't a great introduction for us. Once it was installed though it proved to be a surprisingly good Internet security suite.

Like most products, it's strong in some areas and weak in others. Overall, though, it was effective and offered great tech support.

    avast Internet Security 2012 (7.0)

Avast has grown from a basic, free antivirus software into a robust Internet security suite. This year's version has some interesting features and quite good virus and spyware protection.

There are a few concerns, but for the most part, avast continues to grow each year as a viable alternative to other security suites.

    AVG Internet Security 2013

Overall, we like AVG's 2013 Internet security suite. Installation is longish, current virus definitions aren't updated, and there's no pre-system scan, but it scored very well during testing.

While perhaps not a perfect Internet security suite for everyone, AVG Internet Security 2013 is worth investigating.

    McAfee Internet Security 2013

McAfee has coasted on their name for too many years. In this version it shows more than ever.

While McAfee used to be one of the trusted names in Internet security software, they've just let things slip.

    Panda Internet Security 2013

At each turn with Panda, there were irritating issues for us.

Mislabeled download links, one-line "Welcome" emails--in Spanish, no desktop shortcut for Panda (but one pushing you to buy more software), and no default firewall installation were just the start.

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2013

While Trend made huge progress with virus detection and removal this year, they dropped the ball elsewhere with this software.

For us, for something to be an Internet Security Suite, it must have a software firewall. Somehow though, despite its name there's no software firewall. At all.
